How Long Has It Been?

I am always amazed when I come back to something I keep meaning to. I think to myself, "well, it's been a few weeks, that's not too bad." Then I realize it's really been a few months and I'm like, "where the heck did the time go?" The answer for me has been simply one word...life. Things just happen, and before you know it, time has marched on.

I guess it was a good thing I was so excited about today's strip to finally make a new entry, or else another 3 months might have gone by! Here's the fruits of my efforts:

It was truly a challenge to create a "film noir" strip with a "smiley" twist. I wanted to make it clear that the characters being depicted were up to no good, thus lurking around in an alley. The dumpster was pretty simplistic, but added to the overall affect. The dim lighting and the long hallway were all things I thought were a must for strip. It was kinda difficult getting the proper perspective, but after a bit of work, I think I did a pretty good job given the limitations of the format.

It's kinda cliche to have the boss in shadow, but this is a parody strip, so we really tried to play that up.

Believe it or not, one of the things that gave me the most fits was the bigger trash can. It was just really difficult trying to get it to look right, putting in some shadowing, but not making it look too real. By-the-way, the little can is the work of Mazeguy--I wanted to do something similar but different for mine.

As much as it might not be totally obvious in the strip, my art is getting better. Certainly my technique is. Plus, I can see a definite change in how I think about the art. Before, certain things really were beyond me and it took a lot of trial and error. Now, I'm finding it easier to fully visualize certain elements and re-create them with the mouse much easier.
